Following the Seasons
After years of painting landscapes on site, often traveling some distance, I became curious of what was nearby.
A large Witch Hazel (Hamamelis) grows outside my kitchen. The Witch Hazel produces colorful spiky flowers in the dark of winter, a green array during spring and summer and vibrant colors in the fall. These paintings capture the Witch Hazel’s changes, from the beginning to the end in a year’s cycle. I marvel at its beauty, its strength and endurance during all conditions. Responding to these changes is similar to visiting a friend periodically and enjoying the companionship.
The Garden is a series of recent etching (intaglio) prints of flowers from my garden and favorite gardens that I have visited. The flowers are intricate forms, and their characteristics vary with changing colors. I am fascinated by the ancient process of etching, incising copper plates with ferric, adding tonal qualities with rosin, hand printing the plates in a variety of ink colors and always learning during the process. The possibilities are endless.
